vbulletin tool feature - The User Infraction System

Introduction

With the upgrade of vbulletin forum board, I activated another tool feature, the User Infraction system. The User Infraction system is designed to automate the management of misbehaving users, specifically a member-to-member management biased scenario, with infractions given pertaining to posts based on few regulatory guidelines given. Some members might have already understand the mechanical portion of it. In overall, it will still be governed by the administrators, should the system be abused.

How User Infraction Works?

There are 3 levels to the user infraction system in siamamulets forum with each level defined at a designated number of points. Accumulation of points up to the desired level will warrant certain privileges being removed.

Accumulation of up to 20 points (Account Infraction Group 1):
1. Removal of posting rights in all forums (less frontpage news and others' category/chitchat, gathering, wallpaper, troubleshoot)
2. Removal of polling rights
3. Limitation of PM to 10.

Accumulation of up to 40 points (Account Infraction Group 2):
1. Viewing of forums limits to frontpage news and others' category/chitchat, gathering, wallpaper, troubleshoot only.
2. Removal of posting rights in all forums
3. Removal of polling rights
4. Removal of signature
5. Removal of PM function

Accumulation of up to 60 points (Account Infraction Group 3):
1. Account permanently banned.

So what are the regulatory guides and how does that affect the infracted user?

Regulatory guidelines are pre-defined set of rules that created to curb postings that are usually of non-acceptance in the Infraction System.

How to use Infraction?

The infraction tool is denoted with the http://www.siamamulets.com/images/buttons/infraction.gif icon uder each user's posting profile column. A click on the icon will give you the screenshot on the following, with the current user's infraction status and the choices of regulatory guides for the next infraction command. Currently all regulatory guides are fixed at a 5 days expiry tolerance.

EXAMPLE

1. User ABC posted a post consisting of smilies only. User DEF impose an infraction on User ABC's post. User ABC has 2 infraction points that will expire in 5 days.

2. Subsequent users further impose infractions that add up to 20 points within the same day and user ABC was placed under Account Infraction Group 1 with effect. The total infractions of 20 points will still be expired after 5 days.

3. User ABC account will be lifted from Account Infraction Group 1 after 5 days.

4. If in the 3rd day where user ABC is placed under Account Infraction Group 1, he received another additional infraction points that amount up to 40 points, the account will emplaced under Account Infraction Group 2 with effect and the worst case a ban at the peak of 60 points.

with the example given above, can member "ABC" knows that he's been "Infractioned" ? does it show in "user cp"?
It will be reflected at the bottom right on that infracted post.


anyway SA 4k+ members, so within first 5 days just with 30 members will land member "ABC" permanently banned. is there a cap for this Infraction? after all some of the "offences" are consider mild...

The 5 days is a trial number.

Ultimately the system will only work if it wasn't abused in the first place and base on legitimate reasons for infractions. Else we will see a case where revenge will take place. And if that happened, the moderators and admins will have to scrutinize into every single infraction command, thats the downside of it.

Please see the following for the changes:

1. Inappropriate Language used: 2 points infraction (expire within 5days)
- Short forms or abbreviations that are equivalent to any form of vulgar, abusive language used.

2. Off Topic Posts : 2 points infraction (expire within 5days)
- Posts that totally gone out of topic will result in an infraction.

3. Smilies/Emoticons only: 2 points infraction (expire within 5days)
- While sometimes a smiley can simply express with a paragraph of words, however we do still encourage some form of writing to express yourself.

4. Quote whole post unnecessarily (especially with pictures): 3 points infraction (expire within 5days)
- The most common feature. Need no further elaboration.

5. Insulted Other Member(s): 5 points infraction (expire within 5days)
- A level more serious than inappropriate language used. Hurling abusive remarks, calling of names against another individual will result in this infraction.

6. Gambling Activities: 10 points infraction (expire within 5days)
- Any discussion, picture postings that refer directly or indirectly to any form of gambling activities.

7. Posting of Prohibited Items (Tiger related, ivory related, pyrotechnics, etc): 20 points infraction (expire within 30days)
- Posting of these items will result in a 30 day infraction, account privileges will be imposed.
* For these items posted in sales mart, its a 30 day account suspension.

Boss i got query... does going off topic in the chit chat/ gossip column warrant an infraction?

Theoretically yes going off topic even under chit chat forum. Most of the threads in chit chat section are topic based, less those long span threads which threadstarter started for real chit chat purposes.

sorry for me to Q&A on this infraction.

I got an infraction for replying to 2 brothers posted pictures? my reply was commenting their collection with their posted picture ONLY... NO other icons, bad remarks, etc.

U replied by saying, I got an infraction coz I replied with pictures. SO I GOT an INFRACTION.

PLEASE see many other brothers and sisters replying to posts with PICTURES and they did not GET AN INFRACTION!!!!!!! WHY??????

You have to understand whats infraction for quoting whole post before starting to get jumpy. Forum guidelines are present for years and all need to do is to read:

You are not wrong in replying and commenting, its during replying, you did a quote to the post that you want to comment, for example a quote to a post with 5 pictures. That quote to the reply with 5 pictures inside is considered a quoting of whole post. That action alone by another 20 members who did the same thing, what we will see is pages and pages of identical stuff, that will only attribute to unnecessary bandwidth used up and guess what, annual server payment kept increasing.

At this point in time and date!

I still see so many bros reply with comments including pictures and they did not get an INFRACTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are not special, I had cast infraction to a handful last night. And more to come. The approach is simple, is to save forum space. Annual server payment is not cheap mind you. But to your benefit of doubt as maybe the forum guidelines did really not that eye catching under Announcement column, I reversed one of the infraction to your post.

The rationale is extremely simple on why the refrain from quoting whole post to others' post. As explained for 2 most obvious reasons, first being able to save additional forum server space as the annual cost is quite steep. Second reason is it is real annoying to see pages and pages of the same quote to the original post. If you don't feel annoyed, I am.

A good practice of the following examples:

1. Quote a post with a mixture of words and 1 picture: During the quote, delete away the 1 picture in your quote. Leave the words alone.

2. Quote a post with a mixture of words and 2 pictures: During the quote, delete away at least 1 picture in your quote. Or best of all, delete away the 2 pictures.

3. Quote a post with no words and 10 pictures: During the quote, delete away all except 1 picture in your quote so simple.

The above examples are actually very easy to comprehend on whats all about it is to save forum server space. If this request also seem to be very hard on some as a community, then I have nothing to say. :sweat:

Coz, I see many members reply post with 1 or 2 pictures with comments in Thread Amulet Pictures.

Coz, What I did was to reply my comments with the same posted picture and I get an infraction under bro 555.

And as I said, I seen so many bros and sis reply post as the same I did but did not get infraction.

Can u explain?

Suggestion, if you are thinking in long term of heavy payment and u plan to cut down on the fees, why not you enforce "WHEN REPLY to post DONT reply with PICTURES"



I already have clarified in earlier post and you keep chewing on the same topic on why you are infracted rather than others. I don't have to explain to you any further since this has such a big issue on you.

Sometime back I got infraction for using smilies/emoticons only. Reason given was that people are using it to gain post. Mind you I was in the chit chat session WHICH DOES NOT have post count. The MOD was kind enough to return my PM to explain and I chose not to argue in this case. Reason being I NEVER read the rules when I joined as a Member. This is the House Rule....so I moved on a lesson learnt.

Is only an infraction bro... after 5 days it will be lifted. I also got it before. It just serves as a warning akin to a yellow card. Still allowed to play on the field but no more two footed tackles. So relax and happy forumming... :D

For example someone post asking question about a particular amulet (Eg. Somdej) from a certain temple, but if I response with a post on somdej as well but from another temple citing his amulet is hard to find but may consider my suggestion.

Does it still kena penalty for Off Topic Post? Or in this case the admins may view case per case basis?

I don't want to unknowingly break an rules here even if its only infraction. I like to be clean clean wash bai bai :cute:

I think I have to reiterate again the rationale of this issue. First of all, the decision on quoting whole post unnecessarily does not happened overnight. Even before siamamulets was founded, I have already encountered this issue when I was moderating for another fish forum. This rule here was decided 2 years back and for members to strictly follow is a real challenge man, augmented with constant patient reminders on not to quote whole post so unnecessarily. Till then, what the admins and mods could do were perhaps edit the posts and the most issue a zap, and of course guess what, members complained.

The forum underwent a major version upgrade months ago and following the emplacement of the infraction system, which was used to control all sorts of bad habits that members tend to commit daily, almost in any internet forums. And so far some infractions were issued and guessed what, members complained again. To some, its really a pinch of salt but to some, infraction which is only as good as a warning (yellow card), have repeatedly challenge me via private messages on how pissed off they are. However some of the old members who had braved through together with the growth of the forum do understand this approach and I really appreciate their presence with us here.

Lately, I have heard voices from the ground pertaining to siamamulets being a "really hard to breathe" forum. Maybe it is really one to some. But to what I have experienced so far after so many years of moderating and administrating, a forum with strict and stringent rules must always be in-placed, that forms the basic foundation as part of the structure made. Rules are not made to deliberately penalise anyone, it is a measurement to aid/guide or whatever you named it. Think positively and you'll be, vice versa because infractions will keep on going.
